Don’t smoke dirty bongs, keep your glass clean!

I’m not one to pass on an opportunity to share a bowl with a friend, but the times I have come closest to have all been due to bad glass hygiene.

Yes, a dirty glass bong will still get you high, but is it really worth having to put up with the acrid smell of a tar caked bowl just to relax?

Owning glass is a responsibility and one of the chief responsibilities all glass owners have is to keep their pipes and bongs clean. Over the years I have tried out many glass cleaning products as well as DIY home methods.

Below are some of the best I have found that consistently leave my glassware fresh.

Formula 420 – Glass, Metal & Ceramic Cleaner.

Formula 420

Formula 420 cleaner is a great affordable bong and pipe cleaner.

This is a quick acting cleaner making it convenient for use before last minute smoke sessions.

The main advantage that formula 420 cleaner has is that it is affordable. I have found that it works best for cleaning scientific type glass. The main downside I have found for Formula 420 cleaner the slight chemical smell that lingers after using it. But this smell goes away after a couple of uses and is really pretty mild.

Formula 420 All Natural – All Round Cleaner.

This, in my opinion, is one of the best value cleaners on the market.

It is usually only slightly more expensive than the original Formula 420 Cleaner, but instead of a chemical smell, it leaves a pleasant citrus smell. I also haven’t noticed there being a lingering smell like the original Formula 420 leaves.

It also has the benefit of using Formula 420 All Natural is the ingredients, which I believe lends to the nicer and cleaner smell.

Zen Master Pipe and Hooker Cleaner – Resin and Odor Eliminator.

Zen Master Cleaner

Zen Master is a cleaner I always keep a bottle of around. This cleaner is not fast acting and requires a soaking period of one hour. I find this cleaner works really well on heavy glass and soft glass bongs. I have also successfully used Zen Master to clean a hookah as well as the glass pieces from an herbal whip vaporizer. The best use I have found for Zen Master is soaking smaller glass pieces such as

Resinate – Biodegradable and Alcohol-Free.

Resinate is a high-end version of Formula 420 cleaner.

This is by far my favorite cleaner from a purely aesthetic perspective. The neon green formula always looks stunning swirling around your glass as you see the build up and resin dissolve.

The Resinate Cleaner also has my favorite scent and in my opinion, leaves my glass the freshest smelling.

This cleaner is also environmentally friendly by being bio-degradable.

DIY Methods For Keeping Glassware Clean

how to clean a glass bong

The go-to method, you will find for cleaning pipes and bongs if you search online is isopropyl alcohol and table salt. I have found that this method works best on small handheld pipes when they are placed in a bag with the isopropyl alcohol and salt and then shaken. With larger pieces like

I have found that this method works best on small handheld pipes when they are placed in a bag with the isopropyl alcohol and salt and then shaken. With larger pieces like bongs this method usually removes most of the grime, but often does not get completely rid of larger tar deposits.

This also does not completely eliminate the smoky odor like store bought cleaners do. A way I have found to improve this method is to substitute

A way I have found to improve this method is to substitute Epsom salt for table salt. Epsom salt is larger grained and doesn’t dissolve as readily allowing for a more powerful and thorough cleaning.

You can also add a few drops off citrus essential oils to your glass while cleaning to mask any residule smells.

What Doesn’t Work

Here are some of the methods I have tried to clean my pipes and bongs with that have not worked.

The first is the uncooked rice and water method. On the surface this makes sense that it would work as the hard uncooked rice would cause friction to remove the resin buildup, but in my experience hardly any cleaning gets done, and instead a lot of rice ends up getting stuck in the bong.

I have also tried a mixture of vinegar and water which didn’t do anything besides making my bong smell unpleasantly like vinegar for a half hour.

Ash Catchers – Pre-emptive measures are always best.

The best advice I can give anyone who wants to really keep a bong clean is to get an ash catcher. An ash catcher is a really cheap investment that keeps glass looking and smelling clean.

Emptying out an ash catcher and refilling it is also a quick and easy task and well worth it since it helps you save money on glass cleaning products and the time and hassle of cleaning.

I hope these methods help. Join in on the conversation and let us know of any other glass cleaning methods or products you like in the comments below!
